If you are wary of supplements to lose weight and are unsure of a good diet plan one option to consider is eating vegetarian to lose weight. Because this requires more than just omitting meat it will teach you how to watch what you eat. Weight loss becomes easier with lower consumption of fat and cholesterol but can be tricky if you’re not getting the right nutrition. Determining your class of vegetarianism will help you in your goal of weight loss.

Vegans are the most devout eating no meat or animal by-products (including gelatin). Below them are lacto vegetarians who omit meat but still drink milk and eat dairy. Dairy and egg products are acceptable to lacto-ova vegetarians but meat, fish or poultry are still omitted. Eat no meat products, dairy products or eggs. Lacto-vegetarians omit meat, fish and poultry and eggs from their diet but will still consume dairy products. Semi-vegetarians will occasionally indulge in meat, eggs, or milk.

To ensure proper nutrition dietitians have created the vegetarian food pyramid, suggesting which foods in which quantities provide the best possible diet for most vegetarians. People with questions or concerns are encouraged to speak to their doctor or dietitian.

Much of vegetarianism involves substitution of things like milk, eggs, or butter. Soy or rice milk is a good substitute for dairy. For butter in things like sauteing, use broth or olive oil. There are egg substitutes composed of mainly potato starch or eggs can also be replaced by tofu blended with flax seed oil and water.

Vitamin B-12 which is vital in producing red blood cells is also lacking in most vegetarian foods. Eating soy or cereal products fortified with B-12 or taking supplements is important. Protein can be readily found in soy and tofu, legumes and lentils as well as nuts and seeds. For iron turn to the dark, leafy green vegetables. Consuming fruits rich in vitamin-C can increase iron absorption from plant based sources.

Whether vegetarian for life or just to aid in weight loss begin the switch with meatless meals you know, such as spaghetti. Stir fry can be made meatless by swapping out beef or chicken with tofu. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables will keep your palate happy and help you stick to your diet plan for the long term. The body will need time to adjust to a vegetarian lifestyle so wait to increase your exercise level until after your body has had time to adjust to eating vegetarian to lose weight.
